A foundation of excellence and a bold vision of health care manifested themselves this month as BWH celebrated its rich past, dynamic present and promising future as a leader in patient care, research and teaching.
Four extraordinary institutions joined together over the years to form in 1980 the Brigham and Women's Hospital-an institution with a mission of caring that weaves together the fabric of our identity and defines us today. Our leadership in caring for the sickest and most needy patients while advancing science and training has brought us to the forefront in innovation, quality and patient safety, and reinforces our commitment to fostering diversity in health care and investing in the community around us.
Our people-the generations of health care leaders of our past and our current 11,500 employees who carry on a tradition of excellence-are responsible for the remarkable advances in medical treatment that are the cornerstone of who we are now and what our future will be. Our staff's
passion and persistence and our organizational partnerships have helped BWH achieve many goals.
Last week's formal groundbreaking of the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center offered both a reflection of our accomplishments and a glimpse into the challenges and successes going forward. “The Peter Bent Brigham did not have to achieve greatness; it was born into a greatness that could not be denied,” said President Gary Gottlieb, who quoted David McCord's 1963 book The Fabrick of Man during the ceremony.
Gottlieb concluded, “As we watch our other predecessor institutions age and mature with grace, let it be said that the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center will add to the greatness and richness of this caring community for generations to come.”
The celebration of our institution ensued this week as employees came together for an ice cream celebration in honor of BWH's 25th anniversary. Participants enjoyed complimentary sundaes with customized toppings while viewing the large posters on display highlighting the hospital's excellence and innovation over the last quarter century.
More historic moments will be sure to unfold as staff look toward 2008 for the completion of the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at BWH.
